Harley-Davidson® Milwaukee-Eight History
With over a century of experience crafting some of the most powerful and iconic engines on the road, the Harley-Davidson® motor company has some serious know-how when it comes to developing a big V-Twin. The company’s first production engines were the F-head motors that were produced in the early 1900s, which provided race-winning power that eventually evolved into the Flathead motor. The Flathead soon gave way to the Knucklehead engine, The Knucklehead design changed the way engines were made, laying the foundation for over 70 years of air cooled engine production. The sixties and seventies saw the advent of the Shovelhead motor on the first Electra-Glide bikes, providing these touring machines with more power, and better performance than ever before. In 1999, the Twin Cam engine was introduced, providing more power for the touring family than ever before, and now after 17 years of service the Twin Cam engine is retiring from the touring family to make way for the next big V-Twin: The Milwaukee-Eight.
The Milwaukee-Eight is the ideal engine for Harley-Davidson®’s 2017 touring motorcycles. This engine is built with performance in mind, offering a smoother, cooler, more efficient ride. The first step was to build the Milwaukee-Eight with a counterbalancer, and rubber mount the engine so that the 2017 touring bikes have less vibration in their idle without compromising the Harley-Davidson® rumble. Next, Harley-Davidson® fitted the Milwaukee-Eight with a precision cooling system that pulls heat directly from the hottest parts of the bike, allowing this engine to run cooler, even at low speeds. Finally, the eight valve design coupled with the precise fuel injection allows the Milwaukee-Eight to get better fuel economy, while also cutting back on emissions.
The Milwaukee-Eight doesn’t just offer up superior performance, this engine is designed to deliver the big V-twin power that touring bikes demand. Compared to the Twin Cam engines that it replaces, the Milwaukee-Eight is bigger, weighs less, and churns out more power. The boost in power is around 10%, to a total of 111 ft-lbs of potential torque. It’s no wonder this engine has so much juice, seeing as how it clocks in at a huge 107 cubic inches, but it still weighs in at the same weight as the Twin Cam, meaning the Milwaukee-Eight has as superior power to weight ratio. If the 107 cubic inch Milwaukee-Eight isn’t enough V-twin for you, then you can check out our CVO™ touring models, which come with a 114 cu. In. engine. If that still doesn’t scratch your itch, the Screamin’ Eagle Stage III performance upgrade kit will beef up your Milwaukee-Eight to a white knuckle 117 cubic inches, so you’d better hold on tight!
